Multifunctional Integrated Berm
Summary
Parklands are ideal protective landscapes along the coast. They create a buffer between privately-owned lots and the coastline – a buffer that can strengthen the protective capacity of the landscape to deflect water. A multifunctional berm consists of a roadway or path at the top with sloped or terraced edges. It incorporates a bioswale at the upland side to reduce flooding inside the berm. The integrated berm is designed not to impede views and access but to encourage enhanced uses at the parkland edge, and protect investments behind its line.
