Multi-purpose Infrastructure

Summary

Multi-purpose infrastructure refers to systems that are more efficient and robust in the face of stresses and quicker to recover after shocks. These systems are designed to meet multiple cross-sector needs. For example, porous pavement and green infrastructure installations that incorporate conduit for broadband and telecommunications networks may meet the needs of a city’s streets department, parks department, economic development agencies, and water utility. This seems like common sense; however, it is far more common for a project in one sector to disrupt operations in another.
